Abstract

918,693. Mass spectrometers. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 12, 1959 [March 15, 1958], No. 8601/59. Class 39 (1). In a high-frequency mass spectrometer of the omegatron or cyclotron resonance type in which an ionizing electron beam is projected in the direction of a steady magnetic field H, while the H.F. field is applied between plates 7, 8 and the ions are collected on electrode 10, a weakly positive potential of the order of 1 volt, with respect to the H.F. plates 7, 8, is applied to H.F. field distribution ring electrodes 12 which are also at intermediate high-frequency potentials, and a negative voltage of not more than 200 volts with respect to the H.F. plates 7, 8 is applied to a pair of side plates (not shown) transverse to plates 7, 8 so that the flow of ions to the collector electrodes is a maximum for both light and heavy ions. Plates 6, 6 are connected to the H.F. plate 7. The plates may consist of gold sheet, constantan or gold-plated constantan or platinum or platinum alloy.
