Abstract
935,184. Mass spectrometers. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 16, 1960 [May 19, 1959], No. 17210/60. Class 39 (1). In a high-frequency mass spectrometer of the cyclotron resonance or omegatron type, an electron beam of diameter less than 0.5 mm. is projected from cathode 4 in a direction parallel to a homogenous static magnetic field into an ionization zone bounded by sets of electrodes 1, 2, 3 which lie in planes subdividing two conjugate hyperboloids of revolution. The sets of electrodes 1, 3 and 2 are respectively connected to potentiometers 10 and 11 comprising a number of resistors. A small positive potential is produced across potentiometer 10 while potentiometer 11 is at earth potential. The H.F. source 12 is connected across the potentiometers 10, 11. The ion current collected by electrodes 2 is measured by amplifier 13. The tangent of the angle between the asymptotic surfaces of the hyperboloids and the axis of revolution equals #2, whereby the radial field strength in the ionization chamber is proportional to the distance from the axis. The remaining electrodes shown, include a screen electrode 5, a control electrode 6 for maintaining constant electron current, two screening electrodes 7, 8, and an electron collector electrode 9.
