Abstract
A fuel cell comprises a catalyst electrode such as silver or nickel, which is made from a coherent body of a solid compound of the metal which is decomposed to form the metal in an oxygen-free atmosphere below the melting temperature of the metal. The metal compound may be an oxide, hydroxide, nitrate, carbonate, oxalate, acetate or formate, or an organo metallic compound. In the examples a nickel carbonate compact is reduced in hydrogen at 275 DEG C. and a silver oxide compact is reduced at 500 DEG C. in hydrogen.
