Continuous strips of labelling material 5, Fig. 1, are fed, each from a supply 4 to bottles 2 fed on a conveyer 1, the strips being printed or embossed at 6 or 7, perforated or partly precut at 8, 9, gummed at 10, 11 and then fed tangentially to the bottles and pressed thereon by endless belts 13, 13<SP>1</SP> of thick foam or sponge rubber, the belts being driven by rollers 14 in the same direction and at the same speed as the bottles 2 or the conveyer 1. The belts 13, 13<SP>1</SP> are pressed by rollers 15 so that portions of the belts extend inwardly, as shown, between adjacent bottles and cause the strips to divide along the lines of perforations or cut applied by the cutting devices 9, which lines are located between adjacent bottles. The bottles, with the separate labels partly attached, are then passed between belts 16, 16<SP>1</SP> driven respectively at a higher and lower speed than the conveyer belt 1 so as to rotate the bottles in one direction and firmly attach one side of each label and and are finally passed between belts 19, 19<SP>1</SP> which rotate the bottles in the reverse direction to attach the other side of each label. An arrangement may be combined with the belts 19, 19<SP>1</SP> for attaching neck labels to the bottles. A strip of labelling material 5, Fig. 4 (not shown) may have perforated edges 23, as well as lateral connecting bridges 22, the edges 23 being trimmed off along the broken lines 24 by means of a trimming device 12, Fig. 1.
