Abstract

983,273. Control of A.C. motors; dynamoelectric machines. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 17, 1963 [Dec. 31, 1962], No. 49102/62. Headings H2A and H2J. The salient pole rotor winding 1 of a synchronous machine is excited from the rotor 2 of a co-rotating exciter through rectifiers 4 which also rotate with the machine. A capacitor, resistance-inductance betwork, or other surge diverting device 11 is connected through slip-rings 7, 8 in parallel with the rectifiers. A resistor may be connected netween the brushes for asynchronous operation of the machine. For synchronous operation, the resistor is disconnected, leaving the protective device in circuit. An additional resistor of high ohmic value may be mounted on the rotor of a synchronous motor and permanently connected in parallel with the salient pole winding of the motor. This resistance protects the rectifiers and acts in conjunction with an external resistance to control the starting operation. In another arrangement, the polyphase rotor winding of a synchronous-induction machine is connected through slip-rings to a starting resistor. Two of these slip-rings are interconnected for synchronous operation so that two of the rotor phases are connected in parallel with each other and in series with the third phase. Protective elements are connected in parallel with the rectifiers through another set of slip-rings, or through a pair of the sliprings associated with the starting resistor. In a further embodiment, a salient pole winding is connected to an exciter through rectifiers, as before, and a polyphase pole-face winding is connected through slip-rings to starting resistances. Protective circuit elements are connected in parallel with the rectifiers through light duty slip-rings. Automatic rotor field suppressors may be connected through sliprings to the excitation circuit.
