954,604. Synchronous machines; control of A.C. motors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 8, 1963 [March 9, 1962], No. 9209/62. Drawings to Specification. Headings H2A and H2J. The field excitation of a synchronous dynamoelectric machine, either a motor or generator, is switched on by means of a semi-conductor controlled rectifier (S.C.R.) when the rectified output voltage of the A.C. exciter is greater than a predetermined value, i.e. when the speed of the set approaches synchronous speed. A single S.C.R. may be connected in series with the output of a three-phase rectifier circuit or alternatively, for a brushless machine, three S.C.R.'s may be used forming part of the rectifier circuit. The trigger voltage is derived from pre-set potentiometers or each potentiometer may be replaced by a Zener diode or a Zener diode/diode combination. A polyphase exciter and matching rectifier circuit can also be used and all the components may be mounted for rotation with the shaft of the machine.
