Abstract

983,108. Electric resistance furnaces. WEBB CORBETT Ltd. May 15, 1962 [Feb. 18, 1961], No. 6065/61. Heading H5H. A furnace for melting glass in a crucible, pot or like vessel includes a supporting structure for the or each vessel and a plurality of electrically heated elements supported by the structure of the furnace, the arrangement being such that the effective heating length of each element is defined by the structure of the furnace and by the construction of the element, the structure of the furnace being arranged so as to direct radiant heat on to the or each vessel and being formed with an opening at one side thereof either for the removal or insertion therethrough of the vessel or for facilitating the removal or insertion of the vessel from or into the furnace. In one arrangement, Fig. 2, three groups of heating rods 19 extend through the furnace wall 10. Each rod is cut along its length to provide a helical portion of reduced diameter with correspondingly increased resistance, and the rod is mounted through the wall 10 so that the helical portion is exposed inside the furnace. Electrical connections are effected to the ends 20 of the rods projecting externally of the furnace. The melting vessel is inserted or removed through the side opening. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 5, hairpin-shaped heating rods 29 of molybdenum disilicide extending through the furnace roof are disposed in vertical recesses 23 in the wall 21 which is provided with an opening 22 through which the arms of a fork-lift truck are inserted to lift or lower the crucible through the top of the furnace. Specification 868,442 is referred to.
