Abstract
982,014. Gear pumps. THOMPSON RAMO WOOLDRIDGE Inc. June 8, 1962 [June 16, 1961], No. 22219/62. Heading F1F. A gear pump 10, Fig. 1, comprises a double unit housed in casing members 11 each having a pair of parallel bores 13 bearingly supporting shaft extensions 16 of the pump gears 17 and covers 19, 20, which are identical except that the cover 19 allows the passage of a driving shaft extension 22. One casing member is provided with an inlet 37, (Fig. 2), and an outlet 40 common to both units. The inner face of each cover is formed with a recess 70 shaped as shown in Fig. 4, having a deeper peripheral portion 72 to accommodate a longer leg 303, Fig. 6, of a resilient sealing web 83, Fig. 3, which is abutted by backing means constituted by separate members 81, 82 of similar configuration to the recess and sealing web. The member 81 may be made of a phenolic coated canvas and the member 81 of gasket material. Abutting the member 81 is a pressure plate 80, Fig. 3, which overlies the gears 17 and the casing member 11 but does not extend beyond the confines of the recess. The plate 80 has a bronzed face lamination 86 adjacent the gears 17. Holes 91 through the pressure plate co-operate with lobes 102 in the recess to communicate fluid at pump discharge pressure to a pressure pocket 306, Fig. 6, to expand the web material into sealing contact with the recess walls and also apply a loading force to the pressure plate. The holes 91 also communicate pump discharge pressure to spaces B 1 , B 2 in the sealing web 83 and the backing members 81, 82 whilst holes 90 in the pressure plate 80 communicate pump inlet pressure to a space A in the sealing web 83 and the backing members 81, 82 to substantially balance the pressure in the pumping chamber acting on the pressure plate. A groove 89 in the bronze lamination 86 permits the escape of fluid trapped between the gear teeth and the formation of a fluid film to lubricate the lamination and the adjacent surfaces of the gears.
