A rotary positive-displacement fluid-pump, or motor, of the externally-meshing gear-type has a pressure-loaded axially-movable wear-plate 18 abutting end-faces of gears 15, 17, the side of said plate farthest from the gears being divided into two separate areas by a sealing member 37, which areas are subject to the pressure of working fluid leaking across the outer edge of the plate from an inlet port 38 and an outlet port 39, respectively. The member 37 is made of a relatively hard material e.g. phenolic resin, and is partially lodged in a groove within an end cover 12 of the housing, which groove contains a sealing member 27 of channel cross-section and made of an elastomeric material, a similar, but thicker, sealing member 24 rendered integral therewith being situated in said cover radially beyond the wear-plate. The member 37 prevents extrusion of the member 27 and has its ends abutting shoulders, or steps, 35 formed in the member 27 adjacent the member 24 to obviate leakage thereat. Lubrication of shafts 14, 16 for the gears is effected by leakage of working fluid from the region of the port 39 through grooves (22, 23), Fig.6 (not shown), in a bronze face (21) of the wear-plate adjacent the gears. A resilient dam 41 in a groove within the cover 12 abuts the wear-plate and restricts the flow of fluid from the shafts to the inlet port 38 across the back of the wear-plate.
