Abstract

981,368. Ice-making. CHICAGO STOCK YARDS TURBO REFRIGERATING CO. Jan. 13, 1964 [Oct. 24, 1963], No. 1421/64. Heading F4H. In an ice-making device having vertically disposed freezing plates from which sheets of ice are periodically released to fall downwardly on to an inclined slide, means are provided adjacent a portion of the slide for breaking the ice and drainage means for moisture or small ice particles are positioned adjacent said portion of the slide. As shown, water from a distribution tank 14 flows downwardly over the outer surfaces 12 of a pair of freezing plates 10 to form sheets of ice 24 which are released by spraying relatively warm water from a pipe 30 over the inner surfaces of the plates. The released sheets fall on to a slide 40 and are broken into fragments by a rotating cylindrical member 46 which has radially extending fingers and is disposed adjacent a portion 44 of the slide. Immediately upstream and downstream of the portion 44 the slide is formed with apertured sections 54 and 58 of honeycomb form, through which moisture and small ice particles respectively pass to fall into a channel 56. Water is intermittently or continuously circulated through channel 56. Unfrozen water from plates 10 is collected in a trough 34 and recirculated to tank 14 by a pump 36. Spray pipes 20 may be used instead of tank 14.
