Abstract

A separator comprises a cylindrical vessel 20 and an internal dividing wall 8 with a lower portion 16 which deflects away from the axis of the vessel. Contaminated liquid enters through tangential inlet 7 and spirals down through the annular space B. Heavy contaminants collect in sump 11 and clarified liquid rises up through internal space A and exits through outlet 2. Light contaminants are collected in trap 5 defined by baffles 17,18 in the form of combs. Any gas collects in trap 6. The dividing wall is preferably in the form of two funnels 15,16 connected at their narrower ends. The shape of the funnel portion 15 is configured to approximate to the shape of the minimum shear surface occurring naturally in a body of fluid rotating in a cylindrical vessel. The surface of the dividing wall may be treated to increase friction. In Fig 4 (not shown), the funnel portion 16 is less pronounced, and an annular dividing member (19) is provided below the dividing wall 8.
