Abstract
Fatty acid nitriles are prepared by reacting a feed stock consisting of fatty acids having at least 8 carbon atoms with ammonia in the presence of a dehydration catalyst to form the corresponding fatty acid amide which is subsequently reacted with additional ammonia in the presence of a dehydration catalyst to give the corresponding nitrile, each reaction being carried out in the liquid phase under super-atmospheric pressure, the amide being converted to the nitrile at a temperature of 280 DEG to 320 DEG C. The products from the second step may be subjected to treatment with additional ammonia in the presence of a dehydration catalyst at a pressure of 5-15 p.s.i.g. and a temperature of 300 DEG to 320 DEG C., the temperature and pressure conditions being such that the acid, the amide, the nitrile and all intermediate products are maintained in the liquid phase at all times. Preferred apparatus is described with reference to a drawing (not shown).
