Abstract

A polyurethane foam is allowed to form in a mould made from foamed plastic material. The would may have a lid and may be made either by coating a plaster cast with a release agent and then applying the foam or by sticking sheets or slabs of foamed material into a box shape. The process may be carried out continuously by allowing the foam to form on a moving conveyer between guides which are moving in the same direction, the conveyer and the guides being covered with foamed material. A stationary or moving cover may be furnished above the guides and a foamed plastic end curtain may be used. The foamed plastic material may be urea-formaldehyde or phenolformaldehyde resin or may be a rigid polyurethane foam produced from an organic polyisocyanate and a hydroxyl-group containing polymer in the presence of a low boiling organic liquid, e.g. a fluorinated hydrocarbon. The mould may be lined with a release agent, e.g. a silicone fluid or resin, a mineral or vegetable oil, a grease, wax or polytetrafluoroethylene, or a thin film of paper or polyethylene or for permanent adherance fabric, leather, fur or felt. The moulded polyurethane may be flexible, rigid or semi-rigid and may be prepared from an organic polyisocyanate and a hydroxyl-group containing polyester, polyesteramide or polyether with added water and/or low boiling point organic liquid. In the example a polyether prepared from propylene oxide and glycerol is reacted with tolylene diisocyanate and water in the presence of stannous octoate, triethylene diamine and a siloxane/oxyalkylene block copolymer. Foaming takes place in a closed mould made from polyurethane slabs and lined with a polythene bag.
