Abstract

Fragmentary polymeric foam material is bonded by allowing a polymer containing terminal hydroxyl group to react with a polyisocyanate without extranous heat to give a prepolymer which is mixed with the fragments and cured. Specified hydroxy polymer are: polyether diols derived from ethylene and propylene oxides and polyether triols derived from triols, e.g. trimethylol propane, hexane triol or glycerol and polypropylene oxide, this product being subsequently optionally reacted with ethylene oxide. In prepolymer formation there may be 4-5 -NCO groups present per OH group. A catalyst, e.g. diazobicyclooctane in aqueous solution, may be used. The same or a different catalyst may be used in the curing step if heat is not applied. Curing may be by cross-linking with water. The products may be resilient. In Example (1) a prepolymer prepared from tolylene-2,4 and 2,6-diisocyanate and glycerol-centred-poly-propylene oxide triol is mixed continuously with resilient polyether polyurethane fragments, and diazabicyclooctane in water and cured under pressure in moulds with application of heat. In Example (2) diazobicyclooctane also catalyses the pre-polymer formation. In Example (3) rubber latex fragments are used.
