Abstract
Fibre-forming polyesters are made by polymerizing a lactone of formula <FORM:0978856/C3/1> where n is 1 to 4 in the presence of an organo-aluminium catalyst of formula (R)n-Al-(R1)m where R is an alkyl or aryl radical; R1 is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a hydroxy, alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl, aryloxy or acyloxy radical; n is 1, 2 or 3; m is 0, 1 or 2; and n+m=3. Polymerization is effected at -20 DEG C. to 180 DEG C. either in bulk or in the presence of an organic liquid which may dissolve the lactone. Some of the polyesters are soluble in acetone, ethyl acetate, tetrachloroethane, ethylene dichloride, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform and hydraulic oil.
