Abstract
Polyesters, suitable for the manufacture of filaments and foils and having a molecular weight of at least 30,000 are made by polymerizing an epsilon-caprolactone in the presence of an organometallic compound of a metal of Group I (alkali metal sub-group), Group IIA, Group IIB or Group III (boron sub-group) of the Periodic Table. The lactones preferably have the formula <FORM:0977230/C3/1> where R is hydrogen or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxy or aryl radical and R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical. Preferred organometallic compounds are the alkyl-, cycloalkyl-, aralkyl- and aryl-compound of Li, Na, K, Mg, Be, Zn, Cd, Al and B. In the case of the polyvalent metals, some of the hydrocarbon radicals may be replaced by halogen atoms. Polymerization is effected at 0 DEG -120 DEG C. in bulk or in the presence of a solvent (e.g. a hydrocarbon. a dialkyl ether, tetrahydrofuran or dioxane), Specifications 859,639 and 859,644 are referred to.
