978,338. Controlling clutches. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORPORATION. June 19, 1962 [July 17, 1961], No. 12731/64. Divided out of 978,335. Heading F2L. [Also in Division C5] In a machine for removing covers from and replacing them upon their holes, e.g. in coke ovens, rotary motion is transmitted from a stub shaft 56 to a sprocket 70 by means of clutch parts 57a, 57b respectively on the shaft and sprocket. The shaft 56 is periodically rotated by a horizontally reciprocated member 110, seen in section here, and described in detail in Specification 978,336, through a sprocket 137, and the shaft 56 is periodically vertically reciprocated in synchronism with the rotary movement, by cam surfaces on the member 110. Each clutch part 57a, 57b has projections which interengage with a sharp impact, which is transmitted to a coverremoving mechanism 36, when the shaft 56 is lowered.
