Abstract

977,753. Piston rings. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938) Ltd. Dec. 2, 1963 [March 29, 1963], No. 12517/63. Heading F2T. A piston ring comprises an outer part 3 of substantially triangular section and an inner part 5 having an arcuate section at its radially outer face which fits in an arcuate section groove 4 in the outer part 3. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, in which the ring acts as a bearing ring, the part 5 is of circular cross-section and engages a semi-circular section groove 6 in the piston 1 and the part 3 is located in a groove 10 having sides converging from the piston periphery 9 to the groove 6. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the ring part 5 has a part of rectangular section 5a and is housed in a groove of corresponding section in the piston so that the part 3 can be compressed into the groove 10. The piston ring may be either a plane ring with both parts 3 and 5 gapped and sprung together or a helical ring in which case the part 5 may be screwed into the part 3.
