Biaxially stretched tubular organic thermoplastic film is continuously produced by extruding the heated film-forming material through the annular extrusion orifice of a die 2 (Fig. 1) to form a tube 1 which is solidified by drawing it over and in contact with an internally cooled metal mandrel 3 having a diameter greater than that of the extrusion orifice by means of endless conveyer belt tube advancing device 7. The tube is then drawn through a cylindrical passageway in a device 4 by means of which the temperature of the tube is raised to a stretching temperature below the crystallite melting point of the tube material while externally confined by the passageway and at the same time subjected to internal gas pressure by gas at a pressure slightly above atmospheric introduced into the tube by the pipe 8. The tube is withdrawn from the device 4 and longitudinally stretched by a pair of nip rollers 6 and simultaneously inflated and thereby transversely stretched during its unconfined travel from the heating device 4 to the two converging rows of rotatable rollers to form a tubular film 5. If the pressure with which the tube bears against the mandrel 3 is not sufficient to prevent pressurized air from flowing between the tube and the mandrel towards the extrusion orifice, an internal resilient cylindrical sealing element which is coaxial with the mandrel and fitted to an extension of the front of the mandrel may be provided. The process of the invention permits of the conversion of tubes of relatively high wall thickness into tubular films by biaxial stretching at high stretch ratios when the thermoplastic film material is of such a nature as to require the employment of high biaxial stretching ratios, e.g. low-pressure polyethylene and polypropylene.
