Abstract
A head for extruding tubes or tubular films comprises a mandrel 2 surrounded by a barrel 1 and forming therewith a channel for the extruded material, an inlet 7 to the channel, the mandrel 2 and barrel 1 closely fitting each other in the region of the inlet 7 and thereafter diverging from each other in the direction of extrusion to form an annular passage communicating with a die 6, and a helical channel 8 beginning at the inlet 7 and extruding into the annular passage. The helical channel may be in either or both the bore of the barrel or the inner surface of the mandrel. In operation molten material received <PICT:0823066/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0823066/IV (a)/2> from, e.g. a screw, enters the inlet 7, flows around the helical channel 8 until it reaches the diverging region of the mandrel 2 and barrel 1 where it gradually assumes an annular form and flows longitudinally through the die without exhibiting any "join lines" occasioned by the meeting of two or more longitudinally flowing streams of material. Air under pressure may be passed to the extruded tubing through the mandrel 2. Examples of thermoplastic material are polyesters, polythene, polyvinyl chloride and rubber hydrochloride.
