Abstract
Lead-potassium-sodium alloys are obtained by electrolysing a fused electrolyte of potassium and sodium hydroxides using a molten lead cathode and an anode of a different metal such as iron which does not melt at the operating temperature. Preferably the sodium hydroxide is not less than 20%, e.g. between 30 and 50%, by weight of the electrolyte, and a part of the potassium hydroxide may be replaced by potassium carbonate or chloride, preferably not exceeding 10% by weight of the electrolyte. The anode may be a perforated circular metal plate. For example, using an electrolyte of 46 kg. KOH and 24 kg. NaOH at 400 DEG C., an alloy containing 2.8% K, 0.5% Na and balance Pb is obtained. The Na content of the alloy obtained may be reduced by melting it along with KOH or KOH mixed with a smaller amount of NaOH than in the original eletrolyte, K2CO3 or KCl again optionally replacing part of the KOH. The final alloy may contain 3.3% K and 0.1% Na. The above alloys may be used to debismuthize lead. Specification 491,827 is referred to.
