Abstract

Graphite is prepared by introducing a rare earth compound (a compound of one of the elements of atomic number 57 to 71 inclusive) or compounds into carbon and then graphitizing. Up to 10% of the rare earth may be added, e.g. cerium as a decomposable ceric salt, or in the form of ceric oxide or as a mixture with other rare earth oxides or with rare earth compounds with which it occurs naturally. In an example petroleum coke or carbon black plates, bars or machined members were impregnated with an aqueous solution of ceric carbonate and hydrochloric acid by vacuum or pressure methods. The material was then dried, heated to 480 DEG C. and then to 800 DEG C. and then graphitized. The products may be used as heat exchangers, friction members, electrodes and brushes.
