Abstract
975,058. Reactors. ARBEITSGEMEINSCHAFT VERSUCHSREAKTOR (AVR) G.m.b.H. Nov. 4, 1963 [Nov. 3, 1962], No. 43453/63. Heading G6C. A nuclear reactor cooled by a gas having low neutron absorption characteristics has its coolant gas circuit completely enclosed by a sealing chamber filled with a relatively inexpensive gas at a slightly higher pressure than the coolant gas. There is thus no loss whatever of coolant gas. The coolant gas is preferably helium and the sealing gas nitrogen or carbon dioxide. Typical pressures are 10 and 10.01 atmospheres respectively. Slight leakage of sealing gas will occur to atmosphere and into the coolant gas. The latter may be removed by including in the coolant circuit a gas cleaner, also within the sealing chamber.
