Abstract

Crimped tow for use in the production of tobacco smoke filters e.g. as described in Specification 765,963, is formed by applying a non-toxic temporary antistatic finishing (and, optionally, softening) agent to filaments of cellulose acetate supplied from a number of e.g. 15-100, spinning units, forming the dressed filaments into a flat ribbon of uniform width and transverse thickness and preferably with the filaments parallel and twist-free, and subjecting the ribbon to a crimping operation e.g. in a stuffer-box or compression chamber. The agent may be pharmaceutical and edible grades of.- esters of monohydric alcohols and fatty acids such as isobutyl palmitate and butyl oleate; naturally occurring or synthetic esters of polyhydric alcohols or their anhydrides with fatty acids, such as glycerol monostearate, glycerol trioleate, peanut oil, coconut oil and glycerol monooleate-diacetate; high molecular weight monohydric alcohols such as lauryl alcohol, oleyl alcohol and ethylene oxide condensates comprising monohydric alcohols of 300 to 15,000 molecular weight; di- or polyhydric alcohols such as glycerine and 2-ethylhexanediol; ethylene oxide-polyhydric alcohol (or anhydride) ester condensates such as polyoxyethylene glycerol monooleate; or mixtures thereof blended to form emulsifiable compositions applicable as equeous emulsions; it man enhance the flavour of the tobacco smoke.
