Abstract

Filamentary tow, as formed into a flat band or ribbon (7) of uniform width and thickness by passage over one or more guides (as at 6) and between side confining guides (as at 10a, 10b), is uniformly crimped in a stuffer-box, Figs. 1-3 (not shown) partly constituted by side (extension) plates (3a, 3b) top and bottom doctor blades (4a, 4b) and front and back plates (5a, 5b) into the space between which the tow is forced by positively driven rolls (1, 2). The upper roll is pivotably supported, so that different thicknesses of tow may be fed through the nip of the rolls, and loaded by a weight, spring or fluid pressure e.g. as determined by the diaphragm of a valve (25), Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) carried on a fixed member (24) and acting through a pin 26, on a pivoted housing (22) for the roll shaft. A pivoted gate, actuated by pneumatic bellows or diaphragm, spring or weight, restricts the discharge of filaments from the crimper. Finishing agent is applied to the filaments and cooling and lubricating liquids are sprayed on the side surfaces and faces of the rolls.
