Abstract
974,286. Bed settees. P. F. W. JORGENSEN. Jan. 23, 1963 [Jan. 25, 1962; May 30, 1962], No. 2840/63. Heading A4J. A bed settee comprises a frame 13, an undisplaceable lower couch 10, and upper couch 12 and a back rest 67. To convert the sofa to a bed the back rest 67 is lifted forward from stop members 82, the front of the upper couch 12 is lifted to free a pin 84 from the frame 13 and the couch 12 is pulled forward to stand on its front legs 40 with its rear frame member 32 resting on the front frame member 16 of couch 10. The movement of couch 12 is guided and the forwards movement restricted by an arm 52 pivoted to the rear of couch 12 having a roller 54 which runs along a groove 56 in a side guide 22 on couch 10. There may be incorporated in the bed settee a guide device preventing oblique displacement of the upper couch 12 comprising a spring actuated shaft 92, which is rotatably mounted in bearings 90, extending along the rear of couch 10 with two spools 94 of nylon cord 98 mounted on either end. The free ends of the cords 98 are secured to the stop members 82 so that an oblique pull or push on the upper couch 12 will be counteracted by the spring actuated shaft by keeping one cord 98 tight until the upper and lower couches are again parallel. The legs 40 and 24 which fit together in the sofa position to appear as one may be shaped (Fig. 7, not shown) so that the leg 40 fits behind part of leg 24 which would prevent forward movement of the couch. Supporting lists 38 are provided to ensure a suitable inclined position of the sofa seat.
