Abstract

The invention comprises the compound 1-chloro-3, 3-dimethylhexane. This compound is prepared by the condensation of 2-chloro-2-methyl-pentane with ethylene under substantially anhydrous conditions at a temperature in the range -70 DEG C. to 100 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst suitable for catalyzing the Friedel-Crafts reaction, preferred catalysts being aluminium chloride, zinc chloride, ferric chloride, stannic chloride and phosphoric acid. An inert diluent may be present. The compound of the invention may undergo hydrolysis directly or via a Grignard reagent to 3, 3-dimethyl-hexanol-1 which in turn may be esterified with phthalic acid to give di-(3, 3-dimethylhexyl) phthalate which may also be prepared by condensation of the compound of the invention with disodium phthalate. Examples are given.
