Abstract

973,841. Lighters. CLEVITE CORPORATION. March 12, 1963 [March 30, 1962], No. 9724/63. Heading F4F. [Also in Division H2] An electrically ignited burner torch comprises a piezo-electric generator connected to a sparkgap 15a at the burner nozzle 14 and having a crystal or ceramic element 36 to which pressure is applied by means of a lever 68 and handle 72. The piezo-electric element 36 is mounted in an insulating sleeve 42 disposed inside a cylindrical housing 34 formed integral with the handle 12 of the burner. A curved end of the lever 68 bears against a piston 64 slidably mounted in an opening 66 in an end wall of the housing 34 and adapted to displace an elastomer 58 to apply pressure to the element 36. A disc 44 and a soft leather or plastic washer 60 are disposed between the elastomer and the piezo-electric element; and a sealing washer 62 is fitted tightly over the piston. The end of the piezo-electric element remote from the piston abuts a conducting disc 38 to which is connected a lead wire 40 extending through a tubular stem 46 integral with the insulating sleeve 42. The lead is connected to a tube 28 disposed in the burner nozzle 14 and the end of the tube 28 has a detachable end 29a supported in the nozzle 14 by a circular insulator 31 and provided with gas discharge grooves 32. The forward edge of the end 29a and the nozzle 15 constitute the spark-gap 15a. The handle 72 and the lever 68 are rotatably mounted on a pivot pin 70 secured to an extension of the housing 34, and the handle has a flat spring 78 which bears against the end 76 of the lever remote from the curved end 64. When the handle 72 is moved clockwise the lever 68 is carried with it until the spring 78 releases the end 76 of the lever. The sudden return movement of the lever is arrested by a pin 80. The nozzle 14 has an internal thread 22 to receive an insert 24 which has three internal conduits 16b, 18b and 20b connecting with tubes 16a, 18a and 20a in the burner handle 12. The insert 24 has an insulating member 26 consisting of a disc 26a abutting a sleeve 26b engaging a flange 30 of the stem 28; disc 26a having holes 16c, 18c and 20c to connect with conduits 16b, 18b and 20b respectively. In a modification (Fig. 3), not shown, the elastomer is replaced by an hydraulic fluid and the sealing washers are replaced by 0-rings around the piston 64 and a piston 82, which replaces disc 44. Specifications 970,101 and 973,842 are referred to.
