Abstract

A method of forming a reconstituted tobacco composition comprises combining tobacco pectins as a binder with particulate tobacco materials. The composition comprises tobacco plant parts and tobacco pectins, the plant parts being bonded together by the tobacco pectins, which may be in the form of the free acid or in the form of a soluble or an insoluble salt of the free acid. The tobacco pectins are liberated in situ by removing calcium and magnesium from pectinaceous materials naturally occurring in tobacco plant parts and extracting the tobacco pectins from the tobacco parts. A dispersion is formed in an aqueous medium of the extracted tobacco pectins and the dispersion incorporated with tobacco plant parts to bond them together. The tobacco pectins are liberated by contacting tobacco plant parts with hydrochloric, sulphuric or phosphoric acid until the resulting mixture has a pH value of from 1.0 to 1.7, washing the resulting mixture with water and brining the pH value of the washed tobacco parts to 2.7 to 10.5 by contacting the washed tobacco parts with sodium bicarbonate. Small quantities of additives, such as organic acids, preservatives, plasticizers, humectants and other adhesive materials, may be added to the composition. Quantitative examples are given. U.S.A.
