973,672. Condenser arrangements; control of A.C. motors. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. June 5, 1962, No. 21604/62. Headings H2H and H2J. The alternating current through a load 3, connected to A.C. supply terminals 1, 2 through a semi-conductor diode 4 and a capacitor 5, is controlled by varying the times of triggering pulses applied to the control leads 8, 9 of a semiconductor rectifier 6 during the appropriate half cycles of the supply waveform. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement in which a capacitorstart motor having a normal-run winding 11 is started by rendering the rectifier 6 conductive, members 4, 5 being in series with the start winding 10. In other applications the triggering pulses may be made responsive to the supply waveform so that the capacitor 5 is switched in and out at an instant of zero waveform magnitude.
