Abstract
972,540. Separating granular material. COLMAN & CO. (AGRICULTURAL) Ltd. Oct. 7, 1963 [July 5, 1962], No. 25801/62. Heading B2H. Granular material is first directed on to the external surface of a rotary screen drum 4 which causes the chaff or large particles to be carried upwardly and away by the drum surface and allows the small particles to pass through for further separation, which is effected by directing the particles transversely into an air stream moving in an inclined upward direction so that dense particles will pass through the air stream and discharge at 12 while the less dense particles are carried by the air until they fall out into one or more outlets 16, 17. The material is fed to the drum by a hopper 1 which, if desired, is provided with a metering wheel 2. Material separated-out at this stage is carried by the drum surface to an outlet 7. The air stream is created by a fan 14 which draws in air at the opening 12 and discharges it into a cyclone 20 which separates out the dust. The outlets 16, 17 for the particles falling out of the air stream are provided with adjustable baffle-plates 18, 19 and screw conveyers 23, 24. Differential air pressures may be employed to assist the passage of material through the drum and prevent chaff from clogging the drum surface. According to the Provisional Specification, the screen drum may also be vibrated.
