Abstract

The odour of formaldehyde is removed from textiles, e.g. cotton jackets and woollen blankets, which have been dry-cleaned and disinfected, e.g. by the addition of formaldehyde to the dry-cleaning solvent, by treating them with one or more ammonium salts of carboxylic acids in an organic solvent the quantity of the ammonium salt or salts used being equivalent to or in excess of the amount of volatile formaldehyde associated with the textiles. Ammonium salts of lauric, palmitic, stearic, ricinoleic, oleic, abietic, benzoic, phthalic polystyromalic or chlorostearic acid or of adipic acid semi esters may be used and suitable organic solvents are benzine, perchlorethylene, carbon tetrachloride, methylene chloride, trichloroethylene, benzene or toluene. The amonium salt may be formed in situ by reaction of the carboxylic acid with aqueous ammonia.
