Abstract

Methylolamides of fatty acids containing at least 14 carbon atoms and characterized by a free fatty acid content of less than 4% by weight of methylolamide are prepared from fatty acid amides which have been treated to remove free fatty acids, e.g. by recrystallization from solvents such as benzene, toluene, or trichloroethylene, which preferentially retain the free fatty acid in solution, or by reaction between the fatty acid amide and formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde in the presence of a solvent such as benzene or toluene, which will preferentially retain any free fatty acid in solution while the methylolamide is filtered off. The methylolamides may be derived from myristic, palmitic, stearic and behenic acids or mixtures thereof.ALSO:A composition in the form of an aqueous paste, dispersion or emulsion for the production of water-repellent finishes on textile materials contains a methylolamide of a fatty acid containing at least 14 carbon atoms in the molecule, characterized in that the composition contains less than 4% and preferably less than 2% of free fatty acids by weight of the methylolamide. Methylolamides referred to are those derived from myristic, palmitic, stearic and behenic acids and from a commercial stearamide containing approximately equal parts of stearamide and palmitamide. The composition may contain an anionic surface active agent as dispersing agent, preferably in the proportion of not more than 6% by weight of the methylolamide. The composition may contain at least 20% of the methylolamide and the surface-active agent may be sodium oleyl/cetyl sulphate. Such compositions may be diluted with water for use. The composition may be applied to textile materials in conjunction with an acid or acid generating substance, and the textile thereafter heated; substances referred to are acetic, lactic, tartaric and citric acids, diammonium hydrogen phosphate, ammonium chloride, ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, ammonium thiocyanate, aluminium sulphate and zinc nitrate. The composition may be applied to the textile together with a resin precondensate, e.g. urea-formaldehyde or melamine-formaldehyde.
