Abstract
971,838. Coal-cutter picks. TUNGSTEN CARBIDE DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Sept. 6, 1963 [Sept. 7, 1962], No. 34285/62. Heading E1F. A shearer-type coal-cutter pick 1 has an inserted-tip 5 (Fig. 1) whose front cutting face 10 comprises a central axially extending land 13 and a series of parallel steps 14 on each side thereof (Fig. 3). The tip 5 may be tungsten carbide and is not quite parallelogrammic in side view (Fig. 2, not shown). The end 11 may be curved in plan view (Fig. 4, not shown) and the surfaces 20 thus formed may also have steps, similar in number to those shown. The pick shank 1 is shaped at 23, 24 to merge smoothly with the tip 5. The shank 1 is of rectangular section and is held in a socket by screws bearing on face 4. The face of land 13 may be plain, rather than convex.
