971,158. Finishing yarns. DEERING MILLIKEN RESEARCH CORPORATION. Nov. 11, 1960 [Nov. 12,1959], No. 38839/60. Headings D1F and D1W. In a process of bulking single or multi-filament, synthetic thermoplastic e.g. nylon, yarn, the degree of heating of the yarn prior to its passage over a sharp crimping edge is intermittently altered e.g. by random, periodic, abrupt and/or progressive adjustment of the contact of the yarn with a heat source. The final yarn has linearly alternate unbulked and bulked segments with the latter of constant bulk in the linearly central portions and of gradually increasing bulk from the intersection of the bulked segment with the adjacent unbulked segments in the direction towards the central portion. The bulk and/or stretch i.e. latent crimp, effects may be fully developed e.g. by subjecting the yarn to hot moisture or air or by contact with a hot surface, before or after weaving or knitting the yarn into fabric. As shown, yarn Y passes from a bobbin 11 through guide 13, tensioner 15, intermittent crimping device 17 to a ring and traveller take-up 18. In the device 17, the travelling yarn is removed from engagement with a heater strip 19 at predetermined intervals by an arm 25 which is raised and lowered by oscillation of pivoted shaft 27 due to intermittent energization of solenoid 31 under the influence of a signal generator 37 moving a lever arm 35 against a return spring 33.
