Abstract

970,731. Ratchet mechanisms. THOMAS MELDRUM Ltd. July 25, 1962 [July 28, 1961], No. 27509/61. Heading F2Q. [Also in Division B4] A ratchet wrench comprises a driving member 11 apertured to form an eye 14 having peripheral ratchet teeth 15. The tail 13 of the driving member is formed as a square-sectioned spigot 17 and is adapted to engage the socket of a brace. The driven member 23 is provided centrally with a laterally extending spigot or socket adapted to engage a spanner part. Two pawls 27, 28 are slidable in guides 26 formed in the driven member 23, the pawls being urged outwardly into engagement with the ratchet teeth 15 by springs 30. Each pawl is formed with a lateral abutment 29 for engagement by a pawl-withdrawal element 31 which is slidable in a channel 32 formed in the member 23. The element 31 is located in position by a ball detent 35 and can be moved along its channel by a headed thumb slider 36 running in the back plate 21 of the wrench. The slider can be moved into an end position to hold one or other of the pawls 27, 28 retracted, or into a central position so that the ratchet can operate positively in both directions of rotation.
