Abstract
970,424. Travelling wave tubes. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Dec. 22, 1961 [Dec. 30, 1960] No. 46046/61. Heading H1D. A travelling wave amplifier tube has a slow wave structure 11 in the form of an electrical conductor 42 of helical shape having discrete regions 39, 40 of different cross-section at uniform intervals along its length, these regions being adapted to provide a stop band for reflected oscillations. The spacing between and the length of the regions are substantially equal to one-half wavelength of the reflected oscillation frequency and they lie along a path having the form of a spiral whose pitch is different from that of the slow-wave helix. The structure is supported by sapphire rods 12. A magnetic focusing coil 23 surrounds the structure and is enclosed within an aluminium sheath 24. The beam collector 13 is sealed with an insulating plug 20 and colled by radial fins 22.
