Abstract
1,040,983. Travelling wave tubes. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Feb. 20, 1964 [March 18, 1963], No. 7219/64. Heading H1D. The delay line of a travelling wave tube is supported along its length by a plurality of elongated dielectric rods, the delay line being fixedly attached to the rods at only one end, permitting relative movement between the delay line and the rods and preventing thermal distortion of the delay line during operation of the tubes. The delay line structure 8 comprises a severed helix 9, 10 supported by rods 12, each portion of the delay line being fixedly attached at points 12<SP>1</SP> at adjacent ends. The rods themselves are allowed to move relative to the tube envelope 11 by providing gaps 66 in the rods in the region of the sever, the rods being fixedly secured to the envelope by using tabs spotwelded to the rods and the envelope in the region of the R.F. matching sections provided at the input and output portions of the delay line. The tube envelope is cooled by conduction using a plurality of separate heat-conducting particles 53, as described and claimed in Specification 1,040,984, and the collector structure is cooled by a liquid circulating over fins 51, 52, as described in Specification 1,040,985.
