A shuttle valve comprises a valve body 10 having a bore 12 provided with opposed end walls 18, an inlet port 24 communicating with each end of the bore and an outlet port 28, a tion. The spacing of the rings need not be regular. The thickness of the wall of the hose is valve member 30 reciprocable in the bore and engageable with one of the end walls at each end of its stroke to place the outlet port in communication with a selected one of the inlet ports while closing the other inlet port, means providing a restricted passage for the flow of fluid past the valve member, and cooperating means 32, 34, 40 on the valve member and the valve body for trapping fluid in the bore between the valve member and one of the end walls thereby to cushion engagement of the valve member with the end wall as the trapped fluid escapes through the restricted passage. The valve member 30 comprises a central portion 32 and two plunger portions 34, the diameter of the portion 32 being slightly less than the bore 12 in order to provide a clearance space constituting the restricted clearance. In operation fluid pressure in one inlet acts on the end of the respective plunger portion 34 and opens the valve, the opposite plunger entering a socket 26 formed in a screwed plug 16 constituting the end wall, fluid trapped in the space between the portion 32 and a seat 38 escaping through the restricted passage until the portion 32 engages the seat.
