Abstract

A method of making a moulded article from a hardenable foamable liquid synthetic resin composition comprises placing a body of the composition in a rotary mould, rotating the mould and the composition during foaming and hardening, and stopping the rotation when the body is of substantially increased viscosity but before hardening is complete to allow the gas bubbles to increase in size and the surrounding web structure to thicken in the radially outer portion of the body. There may also be present in the resin composition a granular abrasive, which initially, on being subjected to the centrifugal force, collects in the peripheral portion of the body (e.g. a polishing or grinding wheel) and then upon completion of the foaming, the grains are carried by the thickened web, the space between them being occupied by spherical cells resulting from the enlarged gas bubbles. As a result of the centrifugal moulding the surface portion of the article develops on the outer periphery a skin substantially free of bubbles and of relatively higher density. One specified synthetic resin is polyurethanes (from polyester and polyisocyanate). Preferably the polyester contains hydroxy to carboxy groups in a ratio from 4 to 1 to 1 1/2 to 1. Ethyl cellulose, polymethylolphenols and zinc stearate may be added to the mixture. A suitable epoxy resin mixture contains also polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate and a blowing agent (p,p1-oxybis-benzene-sulphonyl hydrazide or N,N1-dimethyl-N,N1-dinitrosoterephthalamide). Resins or elastomers wherein air or other gas are entrapped during mixing can also be used.
