Abstract

969,949. Tube-making apparatus. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Dec. 21, 1960 [Dec. 31, 1959], No. 44467/59. Heading F2P. [Also in Division B3] Apparatus for forming a tube from strip material having complementary interlocking formations along opposite edges thereof, comprises a guide which at one end receives the strip 21 in substantially flat form and, as the strip passes through the guide, progressively curves the strip towards a tubular form with the edges thereof converging towards one another, and means for depressing both the edges of the strip inwards towards the centre of the formed tube to allow the formations on these edges to become interlocked. As shown, the device is mounted on a pipe-laying machine provided with a tine 10 for forming a trench. The strip 21 is fed to a pivotally-mounted bar 22 fixedly or rotatably mounted on a yoke 23 pivotally mounted on a pin 15 and then to a guide 18 supported by a carrier 16 and provided with channels 19 in which the edges of the strip engage; a die 17 is connected to the rear end of the carrier and the latter is urged downwardly by a spring 31 so that the die is pressed against the bottom of the trench. Means are provided to compensate for variation in the angle between the leading edge of the tine and the line of laid pipe when the machine works over rough or undulating ground; the guide is pivoted to the tine so that the rear end of the guide remains in contact with the bottom of the trench. In a modification, the pressing inwards and interengagement of the overlapping edges of the strip is performed by a separate plough member of V-shaped cross-section.
