Abstract
968,838. Overhead-travelling cranes. STRACHAN & HENSHAW Ltd Feb. 28, 1961 [March 4, 1960], No. 7811/60. Heading B8B. The crab 34 of a wharf crane has an extension trolley 36 coupled to it so that the main weight of the crab may remain near the heel 24 of the jib even when the grab 42 is working at full reach. In the form illustrated, the trolley 36 is coupled to the crab 34 by a link 38 and carries only pulleys 40 for the hoist rope which is operated from winding gear on the crab. The crab and trolley, together with a control cabin 46, can be retracted on to a fixed trackway 20 so that the jib 22 can be hinged upwardly, by tackle 26, to the position shown in broken lines. The crab 34 may pick up electric current from conductors carried by the fixed trackway 20, and may be propelled by a pinion engaging a rack on the fixed trackway. The crane shown is mounted to travel along rails 18, and carries a hopper 52 receiving material from the grab 42. Interlocks may prevent the jib being hinged up unless the crab, the trolley and the control cabin have been withdrawn on to the fixed trackway 20.
