' A rolling mill includes a fluid operated adjusting wedge situated between the mill frame and one working roll, the wedge being provided on at least one of its working surface with a layer of antifriction material, and being actuated in response to a control signal representing some characteristics of the material being rolled to vary the rolling pressure in order to keep the thickness of the rolled material constant. Information from a temperature gauge 19, tension gauges 22 and 23, a thickness gauge 24, suitably of a beta- or X-ray type, and a tachometer 26 are fed to a force computer 20 having also input terminals 29-33 for rolling constants, and a value of the required force to be exerted by a back-up roll 13 is computed. This value is compared with the actual force measured by a gauge 28 and the necessary adjustment is made. The resulting strip thickness is measured by a gauge 25 and compared with the desired thickness, and any adjustment that may be necessary is fed through a filter 36 to the computer. A delay device 38 ensures that connections to the thickness of the strip measured by gauge 24 are made precisely as that portion of the strip passes between the rolls. The adjusting wedge 42 which forms a linear hydraulic actuator is coated at 49 with a material having fibres of polytetrafluoroethylene interwoven with fibres of cotton or glass, for example. Movement of the wedge to the right moves a roll chock 43 downwardly with respect to the roll housing 10a.
