Abstract

966,337. Packaging; stillages. NO-NAIL BOXES Ltd. Aug. 10, 1962 [Oct. 12, 1961], No. 36698/61. Headings B8C and B8H. A method of packaging a stack of sheet material such as tinplate comprises the steps of placing the stack 11 over a stillage 12 of substantially the same length and width as the stack, encircling the stack with a girdle 14 covering the sides and ends of the stack from the bottom thereof to the top, or a level slightly below the top, placing over the stack and girdle a cover comprising a main portion 24 of substantially the same length and width as the stack and panels 25, 26 foldably connected to the sides and ends of the main portion, folding the panels against the girdle, and tightly binding the entire assembly with wires or straps. A protective fibreboard sheet 13 is placed between the stack 11 and stillage 12, which comprises a board 17 attached to bearers 12 recessed at 21. Reinforcing metal strips 22, 23 fixed to the girdle 14 are provided with inturned flanges which fit beneath the board 17 and in the slots 21. The cover may comprise simply a fibreboard cover 15, whose side flaps 25 are secured to the end flaps 26 by adhesive tape, or may include an outer cover 15. Creases in the cover 24 may allow for slight dimensional variation of the stack. The cover 16 comprises nine plywood panels connected by metal strips 32, 33. Adhesive tape is applied over adjoining vertical edges of the panels 29, 31 before the package is finally bound with wire or, as shown, straps 39, 41, Fig. 3. The top corners of the cover 15 may be reinforced with metal (Figs. 6, 7, not shown).
