A four sided carton has an opening between an opposed pair of side walls 3, 4 each side having an inwardly foldable extension 5, 6, the two extensions having a total width slightly greater than the unstrained distance between the said pair of side walls, and at least one of these extensions has an end flap 8 which is pressed into contact with the extension 7 and on applying force to the extensions 5, 6 the opening takes up the position as shown in Fig. 2. Alternatively the closure may be formed between the top and a sidewall, the extensions then meeting at the carton edge. The other two side walls have webs integral with the extensions 5, 6, said webs lying in gusset fashion flat on the inside of the carton when the carton is closed. The top of the carton may be formed with further extensions between the side walls 3, 4 and the extensions 5, 6 in which case the whole of the top of the carton is not below the side walls. In another embodiment one of the end flaps 13 is extended so that it may be partially or wholly stuck down on to the outer surface of the other end flap or stuck back on itself through spaces 7a cut in the other end flap 7 as shown in Fig. 2. All or part of one of the end flaps may be turned inwards to separate articles in the carton. The two end flaps 7, 8 may be plasticized by heated rollers which could also serve as transporting bands, or be held together by clips, glued paper or pressure sensitive tape. The opening of the carton may be facilitated by providing the end flaps with " U " or other shaped cut-outs displaced one from the other to give easy separation of the two end flaps. The carton may be lined with coated paper, impregnated paper, plastic film or aluminium foil in which cases the lining may be sealed between the end flaps of the outer carton.
