Abstract

965,469. Feeding webs. SMITH-CORONA MARCHANT Inc. Sept. 29, 1961 [Oct. 24, 1960], No. 35130/61. Heading B6B. A guiding means for turning a continuous web (e.g. fan-fold card material) back along its direction of movement is shown in Figs. 3 and 4 respectively. The web enters and leaves the guiding means in the direction of the broken lines 80 and 82 respectively, thereby having its direction of movement reversed, and displaced transversely through an angle defined by the broken lines. The guide means comprises a portion 52 defining a surface of revolution 54, which can be either semi-cylindrical or semifrusto conical, with a tangential extension 56. A plate member 62 is integral with one side of the extension 56 or secured thereto by means of rivets 64, 66; and is spaced above the upper surface of the extension 56 with washers 68, 70, a sufficient distance to permit the web to pass therebetween. A flange 58 extending downwardly from extension 56, engages a slot in the surface on which the guiding means rests, so that it is rigidly held in the correct position. A plane through a line 60 defined by the flange 58 converges with the axis of revolution 53, to define the angle through which the web is displaced transversely. The plate 62 is of sufficient length to stop buckling of the web. The guiding means is used in apparatus using fan-fold sinuous web, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), and feeding is by means of a pin wheel 38, Fig. 1. The guiding means is of sheet metal or synthetic plastic material. The plate member 62 may be replaced by parallel wires.
