Abstract

964,888. Hand-actuating devices for switches; actuation of switches; switch cases. CUTLERHAMMER Inc. Oct. 14, 1960 [Oct. 23, 1959], No.35272/6'). Heading H2B. In a switch having a central and two extreme positions, a switch lever 12 pivoted at 22 in a tubular support is locked in one of the three recesses 101, 102, 103 in a projection 54b on the support by a pair of teeth 60 depending from a spring-biased knob sleeve 62, 68. A spherical formation 20 on the lever is encapsulated by an elastic material such as a silicone rubber to provide a gasket 26. The gasket has two longitudinally extending annular recesses 42a, 42b to enable easy movement of the lever. On movement of the lever an annular groove 44a in the gasket causes fragmentation of ice formed therein. The switch is actuated by withdrawing the sleeve 62, 68 prior to rotation of the lever. In the arrangement shown, all three lever positions are stable, but various modifications of the profile of the surface of 54b are described providing both stable and unstable positions for lever 12 (Figs. 7-13, not shown).
