Abstract
964,675. Engine turning gear. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. May 13, 1963 [May 28 1962], No. 20364/62. Heading F1K. The invention relates to starting mechanism for internal combustion engines of the kind comprising an electric motor 1 and a pinion 14 rotatable by the motor for engagement with a toothed wheel 25 of the engine. According to the invention in a starting mechanism of the above kind the rotor shaft 2 of the motor is supported at one end within a bearing 4 in the adjacent end of a coaxial shaft 3 on which the pinion is mounted, the rotor shaft having thereon a second pinion 7 arranged to drive an internally toothed annulus 10 secured to the pinion shaft through at least one intermediate pinion 8 and the commutator (not shown) of the motor being mounted on the rotor shaft between the motor armature and the second pinion. Means for moving the pinion 14 axially along the shaft comprises a pair of relatively spring-loaded levers 16a 16b and a solenoid.
