Abstract

964,650. Grinding. FEINMECHANIK G.m.b.H. April 24, 1963 [April 25, 1962], No. 16093/63. Heading B3D. A grinding wheel dressing device for a machine for grinding engraving cutters comprises a dressing tool 34, Figs. 1 and 3, which is on a movable carrier 36 and can be displaced along a flat front face of the grinding wheel 20, the range of movement of the tool being restricted by stops 44, 46 so that, when the tool is moved across the wheel, a narrow edge lip remains standing. The cutter is initially cylindrical and is ground to a semi-cylindrical shape having a plane surface which is ground by the narrow edge lip to avoid overheating the cutter. The dressing tool consists of a diamond 34 at the end of a bolt 32 disposed at one end of an arm 36 forming the carrier. A stop 46 is disposed intermediate the ends of the arm and cooperates with the stop 44 which is in the form of an eccentric rotatably adjustable by a knurled head 42 to vary the limiting position of the diamond and the width of the lip remaining on the grinding wheel. The stop 46 can be withdrawn by a knob 48 to enable the diamond to be moved over the complete face of the grinding wheel. In a similar embodiment, the adjustable eccentric 44 is replaced by an axially adjustable screw. The grinding wheel 20 is mounted on a spindle 18 which engages a keyed shaft 16 driven by a belt engaging a pulley 14 and is axially adjustable to adjust the grinding wheel relative to the diamond by rotation of a shaft 28 in screw-threaded engagement with an arm 24 of a bearing 22 for the shaft 18. In another embodiment, the diamond 34 is carried at the end of one arm 64, Fig. 7, of a double-armed lever pivotable about a shaft in a sleeve 88. The end of the other arm carries a withdrawable stop 72 which co-operates with a helicoidal surface 82 to determine the limiting movement of the diamond, the surface 82 being rotatably adjustable to adjust the limiting position. The diamond is adjustable axially of the grinding wheel by a knob 86 co-operating with the sleeve 88.
