Abstract

A process and apparatus for the continuous application of liquid, in the form of a dispersion, solution, or melt, e.g. liquid metal or flux; to moving sheets, filaments, wires, or tapes, such that the rate of application per unit area is maintained constant; and feeding a supply of said liquid into a container through which the moving strand is passed at a rate equal to the application rate i.e. to maintain a constant head of liquid in the container. The rate of application varies directly but not necessarily linearly with the liquid level in the container. The invention may be applied to the continuous galvanizing of sheet steel including the preheating of said sheet steel in A and passing it through a galvanizing pot containing molten zinc alloy and feeding zinc alloy in the form of ingots, pellets &c. into the bath through a hopper I, into a melting zone formed by a baffle H. The level of the liquid, e.g. molten zinc alloy, may vary between the plane of the two parallel horizontal exit roller axes and a plane at a higher level normally lower than the plane tangential to the tops of the roller peripheries. Specification 817,838 is referred to.
